How to support career choice

Increase objectivity

The person responsible for providing the parental guidance has the benefit of having seen and been involved in the individual’s development. Unfortunately, this close involvement makes it difficult to be objective, however the CAREER-FIT methodology helps the young person to develop their self-awareness and get a good understanding of their interests, personal needs, attributes, skills and motivation.

The parents can share this objective analysis and have a structured discussion based on the outcomes of the analysis.

Provide structure to the choice process

Career choice is not a one-off event but it is a gradual process that will be repeated many times during their life long career journey. Unfortunately. the first career choice is the most difficult as the young person has limited life and work experience on which to make these decisions.

They are also changing rapidly as people and will be faced with many conflicting influences, many of which, while well-meaning, can complicate the decision and lead to stress and insecurity.

The supportive parent can use our methodology to provide the young person with a structured approach to understand and manage the choice process which allows them to evaluate opportunities in a controlled and less stressful manner.

The parent as a career coach

The use of the CAREER-FIT structured approach enables the parent to play the role of a personal career coach for the young person. We will also be producing training videos to support parents to further develop their skills in this area.

Asking the questions to guide the young person through the research and choice process and then providing them with non-judgemental support and motivation has a significant effect on the quality and level of satisfaction of the eventual choice.

Above all it increases their self-awareness, resilience and well-being.

Support researching and qualifying the opportunities

There is a wealth of information available on future learning and career opportunities. The problem is that the sheer quantity of information available is overwhelming and can lead to information overload which in turn leads to confusion and difficulties in making choices.

Our structured approach helps by focusing on particular areas that have been identified as fitting the personal and career needs of the young person. Parents can play a major role in providing an objective view and guidance on how to assess how well the opportunities fit the young person’s particular personal and career needs.
